Biography

10 May 1800–31 Mar. 1857. Miller, merchant. Born in Oppenheim, Montgomery Co., New York. Son of John Moffet and Abigail. Moved to Trumbull Co., Ohio, by 1820. Married first Elizabeth Keck, 29 Jan. 1824, in Trumbull Co. Led group of settlers to Des Moines Co., Michigan Territory (later in Iowa Territory), 1835. Established town of Augusta and built Iowa Territory’s first carding mill in Des Moines Co. Built passenger steamboat Maid of Iowa. Wife died, 29 Mar. 1838. Married second Antoinette Chauvin, 17 June 1840. Became one of first officers of Hiram Masonic Lodge, 25 Apr. 1844, in Augusta. Died in Augusta.
