Biography
3 Apr. 1814–10 Oct. 1901. Schoolteacher. Born in Mantua, Portage Co., Ohio. Son of Oliver Snow and Rosetta Leonora Pettibone. Attended Oberlin College. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by John F. Boynton, 19 June 1836, in Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio. Ordained an elder by Alvah Beman, winter 1836–1837. Served mission in Ohio, 1837. Moved to Missouri, 1838. Served mission to Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri, 1838. Ordained a seventy by Joseph Young, 17 July 1840. Ordained a high priest by Don Carlos Smith, 18 July 1840. Served mission to England, 1840–1843. Appointed president of London conference, Feb. 1841. Resided in Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, and Lima, Adams Co., Illinois, by 1844. Served mission to campaign for JS as candidate for U.S. president, 1844. First married, 1845, in Nauvoo. Presided over branch in Mount Pisgah, Clarke Co., Iowa, 1847–1848. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1848. Ordained an apostle, 12 Feb. 1849. Served mission to Italy, 1850–1852. Member of Utah territorial legislature, 1853–1882. Appointed to serve colonizing mission in what became Brigham City, Box Elder Co., Utah, 1853. Served mission to Hawaiian Islands, 1864. Served mission to Palestine, 1873. Served as president of Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, 1889–1898. Served as president of Salt Lake temple, 1893–1901. After death of Wilford Woodruff, presided over church, 1898–1901. Died in Salt Lake City; buried in Brigham City.
