Biography
23 Mar. 1800–15 May 1849. Frontiersman, postmaster, merchant, lumberman. Born in Bennington Co., Vermont. Married Lydia Perce, 1825, in Madison Co., New York. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 19 Aug. 1832. Credited with settling Burlington, Michigan Territory (later in Wisconsin), 1835. Settled Voree, Milwaukee Co., Wisconsin Territory, 1836. With his brother Aaron Smith, presided over church in Wisconsin Territory, 1838. Moved to Walnut Grove, Knox Co., Illinois, 1839. Ordained a high priest, 1841. Worked in pine country of Wisconsin Territory, by 1842. Moved to Nauvoo, Hancock Co., Illinois, by July 1843. Served short mission to Michigan, 1844. Affiliated with his brother-in-law James Strang’s Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, 1846. Ordained a Strangite apostle. Returned to lumbering at headwaters of Mississippi River, 1846. Died near present-day Eau Claire, Chippewa and Eau Claire counties, Wisconsin.
