Alton, Illinois
Summary
City and river port, situated on east bank of Mississippi River. Incorporated as city, 1837. Population in 1840 about 2,300. Two hundred Saints, some from Liverpool, England, detained in Alton, winter 1842–1843; Saints later departed Alton aboard steamer Maid of Iowa, bound for Nauvoo.
