Summary
Nation in western Europe. Paris chosen as capital, 508 AD. Political and economic crises led to revolution against monarchy, 1789. Napoleon Bonaparte crowned emperor in Paris, 1804. In 1815, Bonaparte abdicated after being defeated by British; monarchy restored with constitutional limitations. King Charles X overthrown and replaced by Louis Philippe I, 1830. Louis Philippe overthrown and French Second Republic formed, 1848. Population in 1789 about 26,000,000; in 1826 about 32,000,000; and in 1842 about 34,000,000. Council of Fifty appointed Almon Babbitt to serve mission to France, 1844; mission never fulfilled.
