Summary

Capital city of ancient Judea. Holy city of Christians, Jews, and Muslims. Population in 1835 about 11,000; in 1840 about 13,000; and in 1850 about 15,000. Described in 1836 as “greatly reduced from its ancient size and importance.” Control of city changed hands often throughout its history. JS revelation, dated Sept. 1830, delineated eventual judgment of house of Israel by twelve apostles at Jerusalem. Jerusalem also discussed in JS revelations dated 7 Mar. and 3 Nov. 1831. Under direction of JS, Orson Hyde traveled to Jerusalem and dedicated land, 24 Oct. 1841, for gathering of Israel and for rebuilding temple.
