Mead & Betts

Summary

A wholesale dry goods firm operated by partners Matthew Mead and Francis Betts from 1836 to 1838 in Buffalo, New York. The Kirtland firm of Cahoon, Carter & Co. purchased textiles and other goods from them on credit in June 1836. This unpaid debt was renegotiated in September 1837. By 1839, JS assumed the remaining unpaid debts of the firm Cahoon, Carter & Co. Agent Oliver Granger tried to renegotiate the debt with Mead & Betts again in August 1839 in order to reach a settlement. The debt remained unresolved, and JS included it in his bankruptcy application.
