The first part of this revelation addressed the subject of who should be admitted to the church’s various meetings. The second portion dealt with the issue of extravagant spiritual phenomena of the kind sometimes displayed at camp-meeting revivals. Since some thought these manifestations were genuine expressions of spiritual gifts, guidance was needed on how to distinguish legitimate experiences from inappropriate behavior. The revelation defined gifts of the spirit similar to those described in the Bible and Book of Mormon. See also Revelation, 9 May 1831 [D&C 50].
John Whitmer copied this text into Revelation Book 1, where it is designated “48th Commandment March 8th 1831,” sometime between March and June 1831. The “8” in 8 March was inserted by an unidentified hand. The 1833 Book of Commandments dates this revelation to March 1831 at Kirtland, Ohio, while the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants gives the same date but no location.
