Biography

14 Jan. 17901–25 July 1844.2 Farmer, tavern owner, businessman, investor, lawyer, politician.3 Born near Greenville, Greenville District, South Carolina.4 Son of Joseph Dunklin Jr. and Sarah Margaret Sullivan.5 Moved to what became Caldwell Co., Kentucky, 1806; to St. Genevieve, St. Genevieve District, Louisiana Territory (later in St. Genevieve Co., Missouri Territory), Dec. 1810; and to Potosi, St. Genevieve District (later in Washington Co., Missouri Territory), Feb. 1811.6 Served in War of 1812 in Missouri territorial militia.7 Married Emily W. Haley, 1815.8 Sheriff of Washington Co., Missouri Territory, 1815–1819.9 Elected member of Missouri constitutional convention, 1820.10 Served in Missouri House of Representatives, 1822–1823.11 Elected lieutenant governor of Missouri, 1828, and governor, 1832.12 Resigned as governor, 1836, to accept appointment as surveyor general of Missouri and Illinois.13 Moved to Herculaneum, Jefferson Co., Missouri, 1840.14 Appointed commissioner of Missouri to adjust the Missouri-Arkansas boundary, 1843.15 Died near Herculaneum.16
