Biography

18 July 18001–13 May 1843.2 Physician, author.3 Born at Amsterdam, Holland.4 Son of Moses Peixotto and Judith Lopez Salzedo.5 Moved to Curacao, West Indies, before 1807.6 Moved to New York City, 18 July 1807.7 Married Rachel M. Seixas, 19 Mar. 1823.8 Graduated from Columbia College.9 Pioneer in field of preventive medicine.10 Became a Mason, 1828.11 Physician at New York City Dispensary.12 President of New York County Medical Society, 1830–1832.13 Editor of New York Medical and Physical Journal, first quarterly medical journal printed in English.14 Revised George Gregory’s medical textbook, Elements of the Theory and Practice of Physic, 1830.15 Served on committees that promoted regulating medical practice by city and state governments, beginning 1831.16 Moved to Ohio, ca. 1835.17 Appointed professor of “Theory and Practice of Medicine and Obstetrics” at newly established Willoughby Medical College of Lake Erie in Willoughby, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio—the only institution for regular medical training in northeastern Ohio.18 By 1841, returned to New York City, where he resumed his practice.19 Died at New York City.20
