Biography

15 Sept. 1792–6 Feb. 1879. Carpenter. Born at Adams, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of Joy Babbit and Esther Cook. Private in New York militia, 16 Apr.–30 June 1814; sergeant in New York and Pennsylvania Volunteers, 1 July–30 Oct. 1814. Married first wife, ca. 1819. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1831. Appointed to go to Missouri, 31 Aug. 1831; had not gone by 28 Jan. 1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1832. Labored on Kirtland temple. Acting president of a church general assembly that organized teachers, 17 Aug. 1835, at Kirtland. Ordained elder, 29 Jan. 1838. Moved to Rock Island Co., Illinois, by 1840; eventually settled in Rock Island town. Married second Lydia Hadlock, 24 Oct. 1847, in Scott Co., Iowa. Married third Sarah Nangrol, 7 Dec. 1859, in Rock Island Co. Moved to Edgington, Rock Island Co., by 1860. Married fourth Ann Beardsley, 4 July 1860, in Mercer Co., Illinois. Baptized into Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Apr. 1864. Ordained church elder. Moved to Andalusia, Rock Island Co., by 1870. Moved to Mercer Co., by 1874. Died at Perryton, Mercer Co.
