Biography

22 Dec. 1814–2 May 1882. Schoolteacher, farmer, postmaster, politician, justice of the peace, judge. Born at Aurelius, Cayuga Co., New York. Son of John P. Greene and Rhoda Young. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1831/1832. Served mission to Maine, 1833, with John F. Boynton. Married Susan Kent, 1835. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1836. Clerk of Kirtland elders quorum, 1836–1837. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Moved to Pike Co., Illinois, by 1840. Ordained a high priest, by 1845. Moved to Kanesville, Pottawattamie Co., Iowa, ca. 1847. Postmaster at Kanesville and recorder and treasurer of Pottawattamie Co., beginning 1848. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1852. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, 1852. Served as mayor of Provo and member of Utah territorial legislature, 1852–1856. Moved to Grantsville, Tooele Co., Utah Territory, 1858; to area near Bear Lake, Owyhee Co., Idaho Territory, 1863; and to Smithfield, Cache Co., Utah Territory, 1865. Ordained a patriarch, 1873. Moved to Springdale, Washington Co., Utah Territory, 1875. Moved to Escalante, Iron Co., Utah Territory, 1879. Died at Clover Flat, Piute Co., Utah Territory.
