Biography

Ca. 1781–20 Apr./May 1862. Born in Connecticut. Son of Samuel Copley. Moved to Pittsford, Rutland Co., Vermont, by 1800. Married Sally Cooley. Joined United Society of Believers in Christ’s Second Appearing (Shakers). Moved to Thompson Township, Geauga Co., Ohio, by 1820. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, by 1831. Allowed Latter-day Saints from Colesville, Broome Co., New York, to settle on his land under law of consecration; rescinded his agreement, by June 1831. Remained in Ohio when body of Latter-day Saints went to Missouri, 1838. Joined James Brewster’s Church of Christ, 1849; later joined Austin Cowles’s Church of Christ. Moved to Madison, Lake Co., Ohio, by 1850. Wife died, 1861. Died at Madison. Buried at Thompson Township.
