Biography

9 June 1812–3 Apr. 1884. Boardinghouse operator, weaver, teacher. Born at Sutton, Worcester Co., Massachusetts. Daughter of Jesse G. Goldthwaite and Sally Burt. Married first Calvin Bailey, fall 1828, but deserted by him, 1832. Moved to home of Eleazer Freeman Nickerson at Mount Pleasant, Brantford Township, Wentworth Co. (later in Brant Co.), Gore District (later in Ontario), Upper Canada, Feb. 1833. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by JS, 27 Oct. 1833, at Mount Pleasant. Moved to New York, 1834. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, May 1835. Assisted Jerusha Smith, wife of Hyrum Smith, in operating boarding home in Kirtland, Oct. 1835. Married second to Newel Knight by JS, 24 Nov. 1835, at Kirtland. Moved to Missouri, 1836, and Illinois, 1839. Joined Female Relief Society, 1842, in Nauvoo. Left Nauvoo with Latter-day Saint exodus, 1846. Traveled with Newel Knight and others to Camp Ponca on Niobrara River in present-day Knox Co., Nebraska, 1846. Husband died, 1847. Migrated to Salt Lake Valley, 1850. Married third John Dalton, 1852; divorced, ca. 1857. Moved to Provo, Utah Co., Utah Territory, by Sept. 1860. Moved to Payson, Utah Co., by 1864. Married fourth James McClellan, 1864, in Payson. Served colonizing mission with husband to Santa Clara, Washington Co., Utah Territory, by 1870. Appointed to serve in temple at St. George, Washington Co. Husband died, 1880. Moved to St. George, 1880. Died at St. George.
