Hackleton, Samuel
Biography
22 Dec. 1804–6 July 1848. Farmer, trader. Born in Marblehead, Essex Co., Massachusetts. Son of John Hackleton and Mary. Moved to Jay, Oxford Co., Maine, by 1828; to Fulton Co., Illinois, by June 1830; and back to Marblehead, 1831. Served as state representative from Fulton Co., 1832. Fought in war between U.S. and Sac and Fox Indian Nations, 1832. Served as state representative from Fulton Co., 1834; as Illinois presidential elector, 1836; as state senator, 1836–1840; as state representative, 1842; and as Speaker of the House in Illinois legislature, 1842. Served in Mexican War, 1847. Killed in battle at Santa Fe Co. in area that later became New Mexico.
