1 Nov. 1800–Jan. 1866. Farmer, hotel worker, waiter, horse groom, grocer, type foundry worker, teacher. Born at Acton, Middlesex Co., Massachusetts. Son of James Marsh and Molly Law. Married first Elizabeth Godkin, 1 Nov. 1820, at New York City. Moved to Boston, 1822. Joined Methodist church at Boston. Migrated to Palmyra, Wayne Co., New York, by Sept. 1830. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by David Whitmer, 3 Sept. 1830, at Cayuga Lake, Seneca Co., New York. Ordained an elder by Oliver Cowdery, Sept. 1830. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, with Manchester, Ontario Co., New York, branch of church, May 1831. Ordained a high priest by Lyman Wight, 4 June 1831, at Kirtland. Served mission to Missouri, June 1831–Jan. 1832. Moved to Jackson Co., Missouri, 10 Nov. 1832. Appointed president of Big Blue River, Jackson Co., branch. Expelled from Jackson Co., 1833. Lived in Lafayette Co., Missouri, winter 1833–1834. Member of Zion high council in Clay Co., Missouri, 1834. Ordained member of Quorum of the Twelve, 26 Apr. 1835, at Kirtland. Sustained as president of Quorum of the Twelve, 2 May 1835. Served mission with the Twelve to eastern states, 1835. President pro tempore of church in Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri, 10 Feb. 1838. Withdrew from church at Far West, 22 Oct. 1838. Excommunicated in absentia, 17 Mar. 1839, at Quincy, Adams Co., Illinois. Moved to Clay Co. and Ray Co., Missouri, before settling in Bonne Femme, Howard Co., Missouri, by June 1840. Moved to Grundy Co., Missouri, by 1854. Sought readmittance into church, Jan. 1857. Rebaptized at Florence, Douglas Co., Nebraska, 16 July 1857. Married second Hannah Adams, 4 Oct. 1857. Migrated to Utah Territory, 1857. Settled at Spanish Fork, Utah Co., Utah Territory, where he taught school. Moved to Ogden, Weber Co., Utah Territory, latter part of 1862. Died at Ogden.
