Columbus, Illinois

Summary

Post village located about 100 miles west of Springfield. Laid out, 1835. Designated as original county seat, which residents of western Adams Co. soon disputed. In Feb. 1843, bill in state legislature proposed that eastern portion of Adams Co., including Columbus, become new county, named Marquette, with Columbus as county seat. As part of campaign against organization of Marquette Co., Abraham Jonas wrote to JS from village regarding loan of a cannon in Nauvoo, Illinois, 21 Mar. 1843. Columbus never acted as county seat, as citizens of Marquette Co. refused to organize county government until legal appeals were exhausted and county was eventually dissolved back into Adams Co.
