Located in northeastern Ohio.1 Settled by 1799.2 Established June 1807.3 Bordered by Geauga Co. on north.4 Pennsylvania and Ohio Canal ran through county; completed 1825.5 Population in 1830 about 19,000.6 Population in 1840 about 23,000.7 Included Portage and Hiram townships, where JS and family lived, 1831–1832.8 Also included Hudson (now in Summit Co.), location of Western Reserve College, where Joshua Seixas taught.9 About one hundred Saints left Portage Co. for Jackson Co., Missouri, 2 May 1832.10 See also “Hiram Township.”
