Washing of feet

Ordinance symbolizing unity and cleanliness. Revelation directed that the “president, or presiding elder of the church” was to administer the ordinance “in the house of the Lord, in the school of the prophets,” in accordance with the pattern set by Jesus at the Last Supper.1 It was initially performed in the School of the Prophets in 1833.2 As Latter-day Saints prepared for the endowment of power in the House of the Lord in Kirtland, Ohio, in 1836, JS established the sequence of washings, anointings,3 blessings,4 and sealings,5 which culminated with the washing of feet of priesthood officers during the solemn assembly on 30 March 1836.6
