Sir, All is life at . This is the third successive week that some part of the has improved one day in each, in their annual exerecise, by companies, cohorts, or something of the kind. Yesterday was their officer parade, when all the commissioned & non-commissiond officers of the Legion, underwent a thor[o]ugh disciplinary exercise, under the command of “Drill Master General,” Col , who appears to be quite an Expert at his business for a “back-woodsman,” and would do honor even to a New England Master. A nobler looking set of fellows can not<Scarc> <scarce> be found in the Market, than were present in the officer drill, yesterday.
After the order of the day had passed; all had become quiet & still; and night had spread her dark cu[r]tain over the , the “Maid of Iowa,” hove too opposite the prophet’s house, having on board another cargo of these “poor deludded Saints” of the “,” direct from , whither she had started for at the date of my last. The was very ob[l]iging & “lay by” till light, & while I am writing, the Steamer is unloding; and, at the same time, every street is lined with hor[s]emen & foot-men; and the sound of the drum, the fife, & the bugle, and all kinds of Martial music, is chee[r]ing the hearts of the multitude.
It is a day of general parade for the city troops, & I expect to see the p[r]ophet, the “Leutenant General” of the day for all , in his military costume, at the head of his Legion before I sleep; [p. [1]]
