Endorsements in the handwriting of Newel K. Whitney.
The order itself does not specify that the cost of whatever goods Whitney gave to Mrs. Young should be charged to JS, but this endorsement indicates JS was responsible for that cost. In other notes given to Whitney in 1840, similar arrangements were made for individuals to have goods charged to an outside party. (See, for example, Hyrum Smith, Nauvoo, IL, to Newel K. Whitney, 8 May 1840; Hyrum Smith, Nauvoo, IL, to Newel K. Whitney, 3 July 1840; and Sidney Rigdon, Nauvoo, IL, to Newel K. Whitney, 14 Nov. 1840, Newel K. Whitney, Papers, CHL.)
