Partridge, Edward

Biography

27 Aug. 1793–27 May 1840. Hatter. Born at Pittsfield, Berkshire Co., Massachusetts. Son of William Partridge and Jemima Bidwell. Moved to Painesville, Geauga Co., Ohio. Married Lydia Clisbee, 22 Aug. 1819, at Painesville. Initially a Universal Restorationist but adhered to reformed Baptist (later Disciples of Christ or Campbellite) faith when first contacted by Latter-day Saint missionaries in Nov. 1830. With Sidney Rigdon, visited JS at Fayette, Seneca Co., New York. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by JS, 11 Dec. 1830, in nearby Seneca River. Ordained an elder by Sidney Rigdon, by 15 Dec. 1830. Named first bishop in church, Feb. 1831, at Kirtland, Geauga Co. Ordained a high priest by Lyman Wight, 4 June 1831, at Kirtland. Accompanied JS to Independence, Jackson Co., Missouri, and appointed to oversee settlement of Saints in Missouri, summer 1831. Involved in administering stewardships of land under law of consecration. Appointed member of United Firm, Apr. 1832. Tarred and feathered during mob violence in Jackson Co., Missouri, July 1833. Fled with family to Clay Co., Missouri, Nov. 1833. Served as bishop in Clay Co. Served mission to Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Ohio, Jan.–Apr. 1835. Served mission to New York and New England, June–Oct. 1835. In fall 1836, forced to move from Clay Co. to what soon became Caldwell Co., Missouri, where he continued to serve as bishop. Jailed at Richmond, Ray Co., Missouri, fall 1838. Expelled from state, 1839. Appointed bishop of Upper Ward at Commerce (later Nauvoo), Hancock Co., Illinois, 1839. Died at Nauvoo.
