Footnotes
This six-leaf gathering was either a binding error or the result of one sheet coming loose from the binding before the book was inscribed, as the book’s inscription and pagination runs through this gathering without skipping any text or page numbers.
The journal entries are inscribed on pages 26, 31, 33, 36, 39, 43, 44, 48, 56–61, 66–67, 88–95, 122–135, and 164–215.

On 4 February 1842, Willard Richards, acting as an agent for JS, purchased Ebenezer Robinson’s Nauvoo printing establishment. Due to the cash-poor nature of Nauvoo, Robinson was paid in a variety of ways, including by shares of stock, land, and livestock. One of these forms of payment was listed as “by entry to my [Ebenezer Robinson’s] credit on the Temple– eight hundred dollars” and reflects this entry in the Book of the Law of the Lord. (See Agreement with Ebenezer Robinson, 4 Feb. 1842.)
