Nauvoo House, Nauvoo, Illinois
Summary
Located in lower portion of Nauvoo (the flats) along bank of Mississippi River. JS revelation, dated 19 Jan. 1841, instructed Saints to build boardinghouse for travelers and immigrants. Construction of planned three-story building to be funded by fifty-dollar shares of stock. Cornerstone laid, 2 Oct. 1841, but building never completed beyond windows of second story. Shortly before his death, JS instructed Saints to stop work on Nauvoo House and channel resources into completing temple. Bodies of JS and Hyrum Smith temporarily buried in basement of uncompleted structure, night of 29–30 June 1844. Emma Smith’s second husband, Lewis C. Bidamon, removed part of structure and built smaller hotel and family residence on portion of existing foundation.
