Biography
24 Oct. 1811–20 Dec. 1859. Merchant, lawyer, hotelier. Born at Pomfret, Windsor Co., Vermont. Son of John Johnson and Alice (Elsa) Jacobs. Moved to Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio, Mar. 1818. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints by Sidney Rigdon, Feb. 1831. Ordained an elder by Oliver Cowdery, 25 Oct. 1831, at Orange, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio. Ordained a high priest by Sidney Rigdon, 2 Nov. 1831. Served missions with Orson Pratt to eastern states and New England, 1832–1833, and to Upper Canada, 1834. Attended organizational meeting of School of the Prophets, 22–23 Jan. 1833, in Kirtland. Participated in Camp of Israel expedition to Missouri, 1834. Married Sarah Lang (Long), 4 Sept. 1834, in Geauga Co., Ohio. Member of Quorum of the Twelve, 1835–1838. Disfellowshipped, 3 Sept. 1837; restored to fellowship, 10 Sept. 1837. Migrated to Far West, Caldwell Co., Missouri. Excommunicated, 13 Apr. 1838. Member of Nauvoo Masonic Lodge, 1842. Lived in Iowa Territory, 1842. Practiced law at Davenport, Scott Co., Iowa Territory, and at Keokuk, Lee Co., Iowa Territory. Drowned near Prairie du Chien, Crawford Co., Wisconsin.
