James Covel had been a Baptist minister for forty years. Soon after the church’s 2 January 1831 conference he apparently met with JS and covenanted to obey direction the Lord gave him by revelation. Despite the counsel addressed to him, he soon rejected Mormonism and returned to his former situation. Directed to JS and Sidney Rigdon, this text explained Covel’s actions.

View Full BioJohn Whitmer copied this text into Revelation Book 1 as “43rd Commandment January 6th 1831” sometime between March and June 1831. The 1833 Book of Commandments dates this revelation to January 1831 at Fayette Township, New York. The 1835 Doctrine and Covenants gives the same date but no location.
