Personally appeared in open court , , , and William N. Grover, defendants in the cause of the people of the state against said defendants and others on indictment for , who being first duly sworn upon said oath depose and say that , the sheriff of said and Robison Goldham J[ohn] Milton Ferris, <&> Timothy Gridley <junr.> <and > his deputies for said , are very much prejudiced against said several defendants and affiants respectively, and in consequence of such prejudice as the said and his said several deputies are partial so influenced by partiality and an undue bias of opinion and feelings in favor said prosecution and against said several defendants, that said affiants have reason to fear and believe, and severally do fear and believe that the said and his said several deputies are liable to, and will, if permitted to officiate as such Sheriff and deputies, or otherwise in the premises so discharge the duties incident to the prosecution aforesaid in such partial, unfair, oppressive and unjust manner, as greatly and improperly to prejudice the rights and lives of said several affiants in the premises, both as regards the summoning of a traverse jury and the witnesses in the cause, and the personal treatment and disposition of said affiants— and further that , the coroner of said is absent from the State of , and not expected to be in [p.
