Biography

16 Sept. 1820–25 Dec. 1883. Lawyer, farmer, politician. Born near Staunton, Augusta Co., Virginia. Son of William C. Davis and Sarah (Sallie) Van Lear. Lived at Augusta Co., 1830. Moved to Warsaw, Hancock Co., Illinois, by 1838. Served as Illinois circuit clerk, 1841–1843. Served as state senator, 1842–1848. Captain of Warsaw militia rifle company, 1844. Among those indicted and subsequently acquitted for murders of JS and Hyrum Smith. Served as Illinois state senator, 1850–1856. Married Judith P. Mitchell Foree, 9 Dec. 1852, in Clark Co., Missouri. Served as U.S. representative from Illinois, 1856–1857. Moved to Clark Co., ca. 1857. Died in Alexandria, Clark Co.
