Biography

18 Apr. 1794–27 Nov. 1860. Postmaster, farmer, military officer. Born in Madison Co., Kentucky. Married Mary (Polly) Reid. Moved to Hancock Co., Illinois, ca. 1831, eventually settling in Green Plains. Served in Black Hawk War, 1832. Served as captain in Illinois militia, beginning 1835, and as colonel, beginning 1840. Postmaster of Green Plains, 1837–1857. Commander of troops at Warsaw, Hancock Co. Indicted for murder of JS and Hyrum Smith, 1844; acquitted. Leader of attacks on Latter-day Saints in settlements outside Nauvoo, Hancock Co. Died in Hancock Co.
