Biography

11 Apr. 1778–30 July 1843. Farmer, innkeeper. Born at Chesterfield, Cheshire Co., New Hampshire. Son of Israel Johnson and Abigail Higgins. Married Alice (Elsa) Jacobs, 22 June 1800. Moved to Pomfret, Windsor Co., Vermont, ca. 1803. Settled at Hiram, Portage Co., Ohio, 1818. Associated with Methodist church. Baptized into Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ca. 1831. JS lived at Johnson home, 1831–1832. Moved to Kirtland, Geauga Co., Ohio, 1833. Ordained an elder by JS, 17 Feb. 1833, in Kirtland. Ordained a high priest and appointed member of United Firm, 4 June 1833, in Kirtland. Provided funds to church for purchase of Peter French properties. Member of Kirtland high council, 1834–1837. Stockholder in Kirtland Safety Society. Disaffected from church, 1837–1838. Died at Kirtland.
