Bear Creek Precinct, Illinois
Summary
Named after stream that rises near Carthage, Illinois, and flows southwest into Mississippi River. JS arrested in area, 5 June 1841, by Adams Co., Illinois, sheriff Thomas King, acting on warrant from Illinois governor Thomas Carlin, who planned to deliver JS to Missouri authorities. Two members of Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Philander and Daniel Avery, kidnapped from precinct, Nov. and Dec. 1843, and taken to Missouri. Branch of church in area had about 150 members, 1845. Mobs burned homes of church members in area, Sept. 1845.
