An 1841 manual on bookkeeping explained: “All debits are not sums owing to us, nor are all credits sums we owe; thus, some debit items are owing to us, others (Stock) are sums withdrawn by us; some (Merchandise) are sums paid, others (Cash) are sums received; and the credit items also stand for equally dissimilar facts. From which it must be evident that these terms are used arbitrarily.” This same manual states that for cash accounts, “the sum on hand at the commencement, together with every subsequent receipt” were to be listed in the left-hand column under debits, while the right-hand column should list “every sum that has been paid out.” (Jones, Principles and Practice of Book-Keeping, 20, 22.)

Wilford Woodruff related in 1858 that a “sister Voce” from Boston sent JS a letter with $150 for the expedition, but in his 1882 history of the camp, Woodruff gave the amount as $250. “Sister Voce” may have been either Mary (Polly) Vose (1780–1866) or her niece Ruth Vose (1808–1884), both lived in Boston. John Tanner was a wealthy church member from New York. According to his son Nathan, he “owned sawmills & flouring mills & o[w]ned sum 2200 Acres of land, with houses & barns.” Nathan Tanner later declared that his family donated “very near half the money” that took care of the Camp of Israel’s expenses. Although written on the debit side of the ledger, information beginning here is a continuation of disbursements made.
This entry shows this payout as occurring on 21 June, but that is likely an error, as reminiscent accounts suggest that the payment did not come until after the camp began to disband in late June. Several participants in the camp commented on this disbursement of the remaining general fund balance. Reuben McBride said he received “$1- 5 cts,” while Joseph B. Noble said that each member received $1.15. Nathan Baldwin gave $1.16 as the figure, although he also said he received only a dollar because “the sixteen cents change was not handy to be made.” An entry in JS’s account with the Camp of Israel shows $1.16 as the amount of “consecrated money which feell to” JS at the end of the camp. JS’s account with the Camp of Israel has two entries for horse exchanges valued at forty-five dollars. According to Heber C.
