Captn. [Thomas] Thornton.— Dont know any thing of striking .— told Witness that was detailed <or app[ointe]d by him> to fill the office of Adj[utan]t. For that Day, & [George] Coulson told Witness that Morn[in]g. that he had promoted , but did not say to what Office,
Gates.— Saw strike , but cant say for what reason, or what Words, or whether was or not in his duty or place, Heard < call> by name before he struck, & called on him to obey Orders, We were Ordered to wheel to right & left, & the Platoon divided, came to him 25 to 30 rods,— was a good deal nighest nigher to , than Witness was,—
A Split in our Compy., & confusion, & thinks the Compy. was between Witness & the Enemy, but cant be sure,—
His impression is, that struck, to get him to his Duty, but dont think he intended to hurt him otherwise, especially from giving the blow Overhanded, & backhanded, thinks he heard call twice, & then call by Name, [13 lines blank] [p. [2]]
