Footnotes
This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

TEXT: Possibly “sang”.
William Clayton wrote that Law composed the lyrics, while Willard Richards later wrote in the draft material for JS’s history that both he and Law composed them. The song, which came to be known as the “Mormon Jubilee,” was to be sung to the tune of “Auld Lang Syne” or “There’s Na Luck about the House.” The first two lines of the Jubilee are taken almost verbatim from “There’s Na Luck about the House.” A comparison between the version recorded in this journal and two other versions—a manuscript copy dated 7 January 1843, and the version published in The Wasp—shows slight differences in wording and indicates that the order of verses underwent some change before the song was published. Numbers at the head of most of the verses in the journal entry correspond with the final verse order in the published version. (Clayton, Journal, 7 Jan. 1843; Historian’s Office, JS History, draft notes, 7 Jan. 1843; “The Mormon Jubilee,” The Wasp, 14 Jan. 1843, [1]; “The Mormons Farewell,” 7 Jan. 1843, JS Office Papers, CHL.)
