Footnotes
This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

JS delivered the official decision in the case of Dana v. Brink on 10 March, as recorded in the JS journal entry for that date.
Possibly a reference to Cornelius Lott, who managed JS’s farm outside Nauvoo.
Some of these deeds were with Gilbert Gouldsmith, George Hampton, and Dimick Huntington. As Nauvoo city treasurer and one of JS’s clerks, Clayton spent much of his time regulating Nauvoo land transactions. (Nauvoo City Council Minute Book, 11 Feb. 1843, 159; William Clayton, Affidavit, Salt Lake City, Utah Territory, 16 Feb. 1874, p. [1], in Joseph F. Smith, Affidavits about Celestial Marriage, CHL.)
Smith, Joseph F. Affidavits about Celestial Marriage, 1869–1915. CHL. MS 3423.
Possibly William Manhard, who is mentioned in JS’s journal entry for 3 February 1843.
Members of the Quorum of the Twelve wrote letters asking that provisions be sent to JS so that he and his family could be provided for while his time was devoted to the operation of the church. (JS, Journal, 18 Feb. 1843.)
Three days later, JS said he “had no objection” to Turley’s proposed brewery. (See JS, Journal, 10 Mar. 1843.)
