Footnotes
This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

What seal Willard Richards is referring to is unclear. “Dr— Bennet” is likely Nauvoo physician and British native Samuel Bennett, not James Arlington Bennet, a prominent New Yorker and longtime JS correspondent. James Arlington Bennet wrote to JS the following month that Thomas Brown of New York was creating a new seal for JS, but that seal seems to have been Bennet’s idea and unknown to JS prior to the letter. While serving as scribe for JS’s Nauvoo journals, Richards was very consistent in identifying James Arlington Bennet by his first or middle name or his initials and occasionally with the title “General,” whereas he frequently identified Samuel Bennett as “Dr. Bennett.” (JS, Journal, 2 Mar. 1843; Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., Archives, Death Index, 1891–1895, no. 3052, microfilm 1,819,659, U.S. and Canada Record Collection, FHL; James Arlington Bennet, Arlington House, Long Island, NY, to JS, Nauvoo, IL, 24 Oct. 1843; JS, Nauvoo, IL, to James Arlington Bennet, Arlington House, Long Island, NY, 13 Nov. 1843, JS Collection, CHL.)

The Mabie and Howes Circus Company was scheduled to perform in Nauvoo on 4 and 5 September 1843. An advertisement in the Nauvoo Neighbor promised “feats of activity and horsemanship” and “feats of herculean strength” and noted that “this is a large company, travels much, and gives general satisfaction.” (“Circus Performance,” Nauvoo Neighbor, 23 Aug. 1843, [3].)
