Footnotes
This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

TEXT: Possibly “g[lo]rified”.
William Clayton’s account of this sermon clarifies this statement: “I saw the father work out a kingdom with fear & trembling & I can do the same & when I get my k[ingdom] work I will present to the father & it will exalt his glory.” (General Church Minutes, Clayton copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 14; see also Bullock copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 17.)
Thomas Bullock’s account of this sermon reads, “Oh ye lawyers ye doctors I want to let you know that the H G. [Holy Ghost] knows something as well as you do.” (General Church Minutes, Bullock copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 17; see also Clayton copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 15.)
According to William Clayton’s and Thomas Bullock’s accounts of this sermon, JS said that the English translation of Matthew 4:21 identifies one of the sons of Zebedee as James, whereas the Greek and other translations identify the son as Jacob. (General Church Minutes, Clayton copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 15; Bullock copy, 7 Apr. 1844, 17.)
Barau, or bara’, is the Hebrew verb in Genesis 1:1 and, according to an 1832 English-Hebrew lexicon, means “to form, make, create.” JS’s translation of the word here may have been influenced by Joshua Seixas and Alexander Neibaur, with whom JS studied Hebrew in Kirtland, Ohio, and Nauvoo, Illinois, respectively. (Gibbs, Manual Hebrew and English Lexicon, 36; JS, Journal, 26 Jan. 1836; 19 Feb. 1836; 10 Mar. 1836; 23 May 1844.)
