The object of the meeting was then explained by , who informed the Court Martial that they were called together for the purpose of taking into consideration the necessity of electing a Lieutenant and Major General to fill the vacancies which existed in the , after which the following Ordinance was passed unanimously to wit
Sec 1. Be it ordained by the Court Martial of the Nauvoo Legion in General Court assembled, That an election be held at two o’ clock P. M. today, at this place, for the purpose of electing a Lieutenant General of the Nauvoo Legion, to fill the vacancy of Lieutenant General Joseph Smith, who was assassinated while under the protection of the , his own honor, and the faith of the being pledged for his safety, and also to elect a Major General of the Nauvoo Legion, to fill the vacancy of Major General , cashiered.
Sec. 2. That we feel to take up with the advice of the , on the 27th June last: viz: “that as a community of military saints we will let our religion be our protection” with such arms as we can procure for ourselves, untill we cas [can] recieve our proportion of the public arms according to the Charter of said Legion.
On motion the Court Martial adjourned Sine die.
