Footnotes
This serialized history drew on the journals herein beginning with the 4 July 1855 issue of the Deseret News and with the 3 January 1857 issue of the LDS Millennial Star.
The labels on the spines of the four volumes read respectively as follows: “Joseph Smith’s Journal—1842–3 by Willard Richards” (book 1); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843” (book 2); “Joseph Smith’s Journal by W. Richards 1843–4” (book 3); and “W. Richards’ Journal 1844 Vol. 4” (book 4). Richards kept JS’s journal in the front of book 4, and after JS’s death Richards kept his own journal in the back of the volume.

Blasting powder, to be used for quarrying stone for temple construction. Funds were collected to buy “fuse and powder” three days later. On at least two occasions the previous year, JS and others had mentioned the need for more stone for the temple. (JS, Journal, 11 June and 24 Sept. 1843; 7 Mar. 1844; Woodruff, Journal, 7 Mar. 1844; see also JS History, vol. E-1, 1902, 1907.)

Here and three days later, JS evidently spoke about allowing only those who had donated at least five dollars toward building the temple to attend the temple’s dedication. On 7 March and on other occasions, he also suggested that those who aided in the construction of the temple would have first claim on the blessings available therein. (JS, Journal, 7 Mar. 1844; General Church Minutes, Clayton copy, 7 Apr. 1844.)
George Miller, rather than Woodworth, made the trip to the pineries, as Woodworth was called to serve a mission to the Republic of Texas ten days later. (George Miller, St. James, MI, to “Dear Brother,” 27 June 1855, Northern Islander [St. James, MI], 23 Aug. 1855, [1]–[2]; JS, Journal, 14 Mar. 1844.)
