arm, and one leg was out of the window— he did not hang there sometime before he fell— he fell on his left side, his face towards the well curbing— <and turned over> if there<but once on> <he> had been shot by four men, or there had been any marvellous light was about his body, thinks he would have seen it— Heard of no conspiracy to kill Jo. Smith that day— heard of a mob coming on to rescue Smith that day— I supposed the men were Mormons when I first Saw them coming up— was not afraid to stay at the jail— I run up to the jail by myself— Saw no one rush from the town until it was over— <Closed at 12 o clock, and adjourned until 2 o’clock p. m.>
I was in the night the Smiths were killed— at the House kept by Mr. [Samuel] Fleming— Mr. Fleming was not at home— he was gone to — at the East— There was Adeline Garnre [Garoutte]— ashbel Genon [Genung]— and Mrs. [Ann] Fleming and several others— It was not yet quite dark when came— he Said he had just come from <> and was very dry— and Said we have finished the leading men of the Mormon Church— [p. 49]
