The day the Smiths were said to be killed I recollect— I saw <Capt> [William] Grover early that morning at my house in — he breakfasted in my Son’s room that morning— Cant say whether he breakfasted at the tavern or not— I Saw James Gregg come in near that night that evening— he rode by my house— coming in from the Eastward riding a light gray stud horse— a <he was a> small horse— I believe he <(Gregg)> was just from — dont think any one was in company with him— I know he was not riding in a two horse buggy with — I have no recollection of seeing until in the evening— It is supposed that my house is near half a mile from the — [Samuel] Fleming’s house is near the — It is therefore pretty near half a mile from my house to Fleming’s—

Never heard Grover talking with my son that morning about coming to to kill the Smiths— My sons were from home that day— dont know that they were in that day— Gregg in coming by— said the has not whipped us yet— the Smiths are dead— the Sun was then half an hour high, or may be more— he was the first one that I heard Say that the Smiths were killed— I was down in the village after that <time,> most of the evening— It was after candle lighting when I Saw — I think I Saw him at the Post master’s <George Rockwell’s.> he said nothing about the Smiths being killed— Saw neither , , or Grover that night— I Saw two men who came in, said to belong to ’s Company— they brought a message to me from the — Saw no company of men come in <to > about 11 o’clock at night— [p. 92]
