11 <10>— John Wilson— was here a part of the time the day the Smith’s was killed— was here until after dinner— After dinner was over— I went up to ’s Store, and laid down upon the Counter for about one hour— I then stepped out of the store into the Street, and called me by name— he told me to get on his horse and go in his place— I asked him where to, he said Capt. [Thomas L.] Barnes will tell you— I said to him I did not care where I went or what I done— I went and got on his horse and we started, (Doct John W. Morrison and Doct Thomas L Barnes in company)— I understood Capt. Barnes was Captain of a ranging Company— Capt Barnes is here present in Court— When I went out about four miles from here a little north of the road— we were holding our horses on a rising piece of ground— and Saw a son of s from Augusta going in a lope towards — he was one of ’s Company— None of those who went with me left me— I was with them all the time, we were gone from 3 to 4 hours before we returned to — we got did not get back until the Smith’s were killed— while returning and when in about three miles from we met the constable— and a Mormon named taking the news of their death [p. 37]
