to — while going out towards we did not meet any body of men coming to — we saw a number of men coming from towards , coming on the direction this way when I saw them— saw one but cant recollect any more on horse back— a saw one carriage— it appeared to pass the men and drive on this way— I did not know what it meant— supposed they were coming up to see what was going on— I called the mormons hell-hounds— and wanted them exterminated, and do yet— went out heard something said about our going out to see whether the mormons were driving away cattle &c <to .>— we Staid near the road, two or three hours— did not go to keep watch, to See whether the was coming— never heard any one say nor any of these defendants say any thing about a conspiracy to murder the Smiths— I did not want to hear any thing, and would not have heard it if they had wanted to tell me— I was in in the morning— Cant Say all that was going on in town as I was very much confined about my house— did not see any of the Defendants in town that morning— or after we came back— when we saw ’s son coming from Augusta— the Captain said we must go down to the Road and hail [p. 38]
