him and we then went down and stopped him— Doct. Morrison & Doct Barnes rode close up to him, I was a little piece ahead— and did not hear but a very little of the Conversation— until he commenced trying to get Doct. Morrison to go with him to — as <as> he appeared to frightened— I then spoke to him and said he was a young lad— and that I had no idea they would interrupt him— that the was there, and he might go on in safety— and he then left us and went on— Never heard — — — or Grover that they were in any conspiracy to kill Jo. Smith— Thinks he saw some of the same men going back before he returned to town— So as many as 50 <or more> coming this way, and as many as 20 or more returning back— we were about three miles from town when the Smith’s were killed— Did not suppose these men were coming here to kill the Smith’s— not uncommon that as many as 50 men should come from at a time— I went out to beat up for volunteers— went as far as Scott County— to and made speeches, to induce the People to come and assist us— I beat up for volunteers— and intend to do it again— I was very much astonished and horror Struck when I first heard that the Smith’s were killed— but it did not last a long time— I returned to before [p. 39]
