I recollect the the day the Smiths were killed— saw Capt [William] Grover that morning Grover Eat breakfast at my sons,— I saw James Gregg that day <as> he came in and spoke to him he was on horseback riding a light gray steed— I believe he was just from — I think he was alone— I know he was not riding in a two horse buggy with with him— It is supposed to be near 1/2 mile from my home to [Samuel] Flemings— Grover was at my sons for no other perpose than to get breakfast that I know of— he said that the had not whipped us nicely the Smiths were dead— the son was about half an hour high when Gregg passed me— I saw after candle-liting at [George] Rockwells— I saw two men from the that night
I live in I was there on the 27th 1844 I saw there in the evening he came in on horseback <on> a cream coloured horse he stopped at the post office— I never made Dan any <[Wiliam] Daniels> an offer of any things— I know nothing of an express being sent to [p. [50]]
