thinks it three hundred yards from the Corner of the Public Square to the Jail— where & were Standing— might have heard a gun— I was Sergeant of the company and called out the Company— I saw some persons on the Court house, but did not see any signals— I was on the Square cant say who were on the Courthouse cant say how many, there was one— dont recollect whether I saw them on the Court house before or after the gun was fired— we started as soon as we could get the men together— The Captain was a asleep at <Doct. Evans’s Office—> cant say how long it was after we heard the gun fired until we got of the Square— Saw standing on the Corner of the public Square— he said nothing to me— Capt. [Robert] Smith commanded the Carthage Grays after I called them out— I saw Smith when he fell— we were then at or near the Corner of the lane where we turned off north from Main Street— it was half way or very near it to the Jail— did not see start at all to go to the jail— When we got to the Jail the mob had got 300 yards off— we made no pursuit after them— [p. 14]
