[illegible] [n]ot know whose carriage it is about 18 miles from to — do not know what was the condition of the roads there had been a great deal of reign about that time— It was the same day that the Sm[ith]s were killed that I saw start in the carriage and the same evening I saw him return in the same carriage— about midnight & Mr Grover came before they came I had heard nothing more about the killing of the Smiths we but what said— & Grover were regular boarders at Mr Flemings Grover Breakfasted there that morning— Did not see him after untill he returned at mid night— I saw at breakfast at Flemmingss & did not see him after untill midnight said when he came in we have finished the men— Grover said I have killed old Jo— we had not gon to bead when they came it was not unusual for us to set up that late some of the family had gon to bead It was 4 o clock before I went to bead— there was no preparation mad before they came— some come immediately into the dining [p.
