<9.> From the Time that was called to the , in July 1838, the devil seemed to take a great dislike to him, and strove to stir up the minds of many againt him. was afflicted with sickness. and several times was brought to the borders of the grave. And many were tempted to believe that he was under transgression or he would not be thus afflicted. Some were tried <& tempted> because took to himself a , they thought he should have given himself wholly to the minist[r]y, and followed Pauls advice to the letter. Some were tried because his wore a vail, and others because she carried a muff <to keep herself warm> in cold weather, to when she walked out, <in cold weather,> & even the president of the there thought she “had better done without it,”—<She had nothing ever purchasd by the chuch— & to gratify their feeli[n]gs wore the poorest clothes she had, and those were too good.> <So ha[r]d was it to buffut the storms of feeling that arose from such foolish causes.> was very sick for some time & some were dissatisfied because he did not neglect her & entirely, and go at preaching, and others because she did not go to meeting when she was not able to go so far.— from such little things arose a spirit of jealousy, tatling evil speaking, surmisery, & covetousness, & rebellion, until the church but too generally harbard [harbored] more or less of those unpleasnt feelings, and this ev[en]ing Elder Holsal come out openly in counsil againt Elder , and prefird [preferred] some heavy charges. none of which he was able to substantiate. <Most of the elders in were againt Bro for a season— except , — who proved himself true in the hour of trial.>
