any one else— making a speech— but — <it is> impossible <for me> to recollect the words of his speech— he was speaking of the necessity of getting rid of the Mormons— he pointed to the necessity of killing the Smiths to get rid of the Mormons— wanted the troops to come to — wanted to come with his company— said he would not do it— said if they would go to <> he would go with them, but if they wanted to go to he would not— said he would go home— and they called him a damned coward— and that they would never elect him again, because he would not come— Dont recollect to have heard say any thing on the ground there about coming to — Dont recollect to have heard say any thing about coming— heard Grover say he would come alone if nobody else would come— I came within about four miles of with them— There was a call made for volunteers about the time said he would not go— The call of <for> the volunteers was to kill the Smiths, but dont recollect the exact words that were used— it <this> was 10 or 12 miles from — it <this> was about noon they were at the Rail [p. 17]
