thinks was on horseback— and thinks he might have been on foot too— The company divided when the call was made— We were all drawn up in line— those who volunteered to go, were to advance in front— and the rest to remain in line— was off some distance— Saw before the division took place— The Officer <Captain> who gave the command to advance was in front— also in front with the Capt. but cant say which gave the order command to advance— thinks there were between 40 and 200 in the company— there were but two companies there Capt. Wiers and Capt [Harrison P.] Crawford the rest had stopped at the rail-road— read the orders to disband— cant say whether Genl. Knox or was in command before the troops were disbanded— Gen Knox was there— but read the disbanding order— There was then again an observation made that those who would go to would fall in behind the Music— the Company then marched round— dont know where was when they were marching round— I was one of the first that started back to — after Starting and crossing the Rail road I stopped on the hill and looked back and saw a Company in the bottom, and that is the last I saw of them— Cant tell whether any one Said any thing about killing the Smiths— Thinks it was an officer who gave the command to advance, but whether it was the Captain or , cant recollect— [p. 45]
